New Name | New Era
Welcome to the first blog post under our new studio name. There’s been a lot going on this year, so I’m writing to get people up to speed. Recently I made the decision to re-brand the company under a new name… K_N Design Studio.
This is one of the biggest moves since establishing Keiron Calder Design Limited back in 2016. The decision wasn’t made lightly, and has been in the works for the past year or so. One of the main reasons for the name change is to mark a new era for the company.
Product Development - 2017
In the last 12 months, I have experienced (or become more aware of) the benefits of self employment. I finally got to the point where actually, I can’t see myself going back to working for someone else. Running my own business is the dream I never knew I wanted, and I can’t imagine a world where I’m not doing it. I mean, technically I work for lots of bosses! As each client is part boss, part collaborator. But it’s a completely different relationship.
After my first year, it became clear that the company is W A Y bigger than Keiron Calder. In fact, it seemed a sort of injustice to have my (obscurely spelled) name as the title. The problem was, I didn’t have any genius ideas for a company name. I brainstormed, I asked other people for ideas and opinions, but in this day and age, pretty much E V E R Y T H I N G has already been done in some way.
In the end, the new name came to me in a dream one night. It appeared clear as day in big bold type. K_N. Now my name Keiron is the Scottish spelling which most people (even Scots!) mispronounce when they see it, and definitely mis-spell when they write it! (which isn’t great for google searches!). It’s a problem I’ve always had since primary school. I’ve seen Kieron, Kieran, kerian, ciaran, caoron, and sooooo many other weird and wonderful versions.
The new studio name - 2018
That’s where K_N comes in. Taking the first and last letter of my name and deleting out the rest provides simplicity, memorability, and a clearer message. It might still confuse people on how to pronounce it / spell it / yell it / but hey, thats all part of the fun. In a weird way, I actually like that it still has a bit of confusion surrounding it. It feels like a nod back to the old name. To clarify, the name is pronounced KEN, spelled K_N, but the web address is K-N (underscores are a sacred force of the inter web!).
My dads name is Kenneth, so calling the company Ken initially felt a bit weird, (also, Mattel Inc happen to own the domain name because of Barbie’s plastic other half!). In the end the addition of the _ gave it a little extra something. I guess it represents what the company does. Bridging the gap between retailer and manufacturer, and telling stories in the most minimal, effective way. And so K_N Design Studio was born. A real name that’s bigger than little old me.
So… We have a new name! Y E Y ! But that’s not all. We also recently moved into a bright new studio space on Castle Terrace. The new home of K_N. It’s a great location with the castle staring down at us, a quick walk to the tram / Haymarket train station, and we’re 30 mins from Edinburgh Airport. Also, the neighbours are really nice!
New commute isn't half bad - 2018
The next excitement for K_N is the imminent launch of our first mass manufactured products. We’ve designed some beautiful outdoor furniture for a fantastic supplier and manufacturer which is launching in a couple of weeks in the UK. The UK retailers we collaborated with are John Lewis &
I’m absolutely thrilled to see products launch with both of these retailers, and I’m really proud of the work we’ve done. I’ll definitely be sharing these as soon as they hit the shelves, and adding them pride of place to the new website in due course! For now, here’s a sneak peek at the Salsa swing that I snapped last week in John Lewis Oxford Street store! (a surreal moment for me).

Filmed by a confused member of staff haha
So what does the future hold for K_N? Well, we are currently developing more outdoor furniture products for Summer 2019, and I’ve also been consulting on some interesting interior projects which are now underway. The focus going forward is
I aim to collaborate with as many interesting brands, clients, designers and businesses as possible. K_N is a collaborative design consultancy, and we aim to help clients develop their vision, understand their target audience and engage with them in meaningful ways.
So… More collaborations, more products, more projects, and definitely more furniture. Sounds good to me.
